Meet Amy Alvarez
Amy Alvarez, LCSW-BACS, MPH, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 30 years of experience working in adoption. She began her career working as a counselor in a local maternity home. She was also the director of adoption services for a large human services agency in New Orleans prior to Hurricane Katrina. Throughout her career, she has provided birthparent counseling, adoption home studies and postplacement services as a private practitioner, partnering with agencies and attorneys.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts and Philosophy from Mount Holyoke College and Masters degrees in Social Work and Public Health from Tulane University. She also holds a Certificate in Forensic Social Work from Tulane, and completed a fellowship in Infant Mental Health with Louisiana State University School of Medicine. In addition, she has advanced training in perinatal mood disorders. She is LGBTQ-allied and committed to social justice.
When not providing social work services, she is an award-winning professional actor and cabaret singer, and has performed in New Orleans, Baltimore, and New York City. She is also a wife, and a mom and is really into cats.
She loves working in adoption because families are endlessly fascinating. There's no one way to be a family, and she is passionate about tearing down the old-fashioned gatekeeping that continues to live in the adoption world. To that end, she is especially interested in working with LGBTQ+ families. The adoption experience can encompass such a wide range of emotions- grief, loss, joy, and hope for the future.
"It is my honor to walk with families whose lives are touched by adoption." - Amy Alvarez
